My first formal teaching positions came just over 20 years ago while living abroad in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Prior to that, I had an internship in Los Angeles Chinatown while getting my International Relations minor. 20 years passed before my next teaching job in China in 2005.
Ever since my 5th grade teacher Mrs. Stevenson encouraged and challenged me to reach my potential, I have found education as a great source of self-esteem. Teaching became more of interest to me after taking aptitude testing at the Johnson O'Connor Research Foundation. In addtion to consulting and owning my own specialty business, it was recommended I teach young adults - i.e. community college learners what I know. Some of what I know is business, sales, marketing and psychology. While teaching Business Strategy and Human Resource Development at Bai Yun University, I began a 3-year daily regimen of performing the Creating Your Desires exercise. I returned to China in 2007 to work with individuals and businesses on the soft skills (confidence, relaxation, etc) of speaking conversational English. One of my clients, Trade Ok, requested I teach the alternative concepts and techniques I used in English conversation sessions to their sales staff in Guangzhou. I found a positive response to such concepts as relaxation and confidence-building techniques along with perspectives and techniques that translate well to the sales profession. The carrot for many students was learning more English, but at the heart is the meat and potatoes.
It is my hope to develop this type of content with both instructor-led and self-study courses. In fact, Creating Your Desires is relatively straightforward and can be done on one's own as an exercise. Training for the mental side of work can be done like one goes to the gym: participating in classes or working out on one's own. Too often, we go to expensive seminars only to come home and forget much of what is learned and lose the momentum gained from such gatherings.
